Where We Have Been-
David Miller has devoted a sizable portion of his life to the piano. Beginning to play at the age of five, and studying from one source or another through his mid-teens, David knew that his dream choice of careers would be to play piano. (Southern Gospel and Western Swing were his biggest influences.) A few years later he learned that this “dream career” could probably never happen. He began having epileptic seizures that were, as far as any doctor could determine, triggered by stress and adrenaline. Since many of the best medicines for seizures did not exist at that point, and stress and adrenaline are two major factors in the life of a working musician he finally accepted that a “Plan B” career choice would be required, although he was not ready to accept a career that was not music-related in some way.
Finally, during his sophomore year in college, David was able to get into a program which taught him how to tune and repair pianos. The church where he was a member donated an old upright piano which he restored during the course and then sold to raise capital to get his business going. Thus began a 25-year career that remained a “Plan B” only in the sense that it wasn’t thought of first. The mainstay of his business was to go into homes and do whatever tuning and adjustments were needed, educating the owners about how a piano worked and why they go out of tune, whenever possible ending with a bit of entertainment so that the clients were left with a song in their hearts as he drove “into the sunset”. There have been some challenges along the way. David had to explain to one lady, a French-Canadian women who spoke almost no English, that certain parts in her antique upright piano which were breaking were not available from any of his parts suppliers, and to have them duplicated in a machine shop would cost several times what the piano was worth, if it could even be done. Fortunately, her husband was able to translate. The takeaway from that experience was this: “Je regrette, je ne parle pas français.” (I’m sorry, I don’t speak French.)
There has been music along the way. In addition to entertaining his private clients David also tuned for a concert promoter for a few years and got to see several shows from backstage. (He even played in a few). He played several weddings through the years, has played for different churches a total in excess of 20 years so far, and played part-time for a regional Southern Gospel group called “Good News” for about 15 years.
How We Got From There to Here-
Since David had to leave the piano business in 2002 because of a back injury from a car wreck, he has been looking for ways to continue to share his knowledge and experience with those that could benefit. Now in his 50’s, he has published one book so far, the E-Z Play Hymnal for Young Players and is working on others. However, he still seeks out opportunities to educate piano owners. It is hoped that this blog is a major step in that direction.
